Creating fields on Montage

Montage allows you to create fields for your farm and tie useful information to that field.  Here you’ll learn the methods to set up your fields to create accurate ranch maps. You can draw field boundaries by hand on top of satellite imagery, populate fields by APN, or use a parcel overlay to select your properties.

With creating fields you can:

  • Connect data to specific fields using a Map.
  • Calculate acreage when drawing your fields.

3 Ways to Draw Your Field

Montage provides multiple options to create accurate ranch maps.  You can draw field boundaries by hand on top of satellite imagery, populate fields by APN, or use a parcel overlay to select your properties.

Method 1. Draw by hand

  • Ideal for drawing your own shapes
  • Another bullet when its good to use

Drawing your own field by hand is the best way to draw a fiend when you want the flexibility of the field shape. Getting started begins when you click the first point on the map. Continue add more points as needed. To close the field, click on the first point you started with.

Under the search bar, click ‘Draw By Hand’ and left-click on a corner of the field to start drawing. Click at each corner of the field to outline it or change direction and continue until you outline your entire field.

Method 2. Enter by APN

  • Access an APN Database
  • Ideal when you have APN information to enter

Drawing a field by APN information is the second way you can create a field. This requires the APN that you are wanting to enter into Montage. It also requires entering in the county and state the APN is issued in.

Select ‘Search By APN’ then enter in the Assessor’s Parcel Number (APN) along with the County and State where the field is located, then select ‘Search’. The field will be populated on the map based on the parcel boundaries.

3. Select On Parcel Overlay

  • Use an APN parcel overlay to choose
  • Ideal when you know where it is located on the map

You can create a field using the built-in parcel overlay on the map. Using this method, you can use the map to locate the area you want to create a field. The shape of the fields on the overlay is based on an APN database.

If you don’t know your Assessor’s Parcel Number (APN) but you do know the parcel location, use this option. Select ‘Find By Parcel Boundaries’ which will automatically turn on the parcels overlay. Click on the parcel that represents your field to add it to your ranch map.

Adding Field Details

Once you’ve added the field to your map, name it, choose a color, then you can enter in relevant details like crop, varietal, row spacing, etc. Remember to SAVE once you’ve finished.

Saving your field

Creating a field is not completed until you hit the save button. Once you have set all the information you wanted you can hit the save button. This will take you back to the map legend where your newly created field will appear!

Edit Field Boundaries & Color

To edit a field itself, click ‘Fields’ in the Map Legend, then click the Pencil Icon to toggle edit mode and select the field you’d like to edit from the list. Now you can change the Field Name, color and the field boundaries. To change the shape or size of the field just click and hold a point on the boundary and drag it to a new area on the map. Repeat until the shape is correct, Montage will automatically recalculate the farmable acres based on the new field boundaries.
